How long does the Pech Merle visit last?

Time in the Cave, Station by Station

The developed route is 1,200 metres long and includes fourteen stops, from the entrance staircase dug in 1923 to the panel of the dotted horses. The guide stops at each one, illuminates it, explains, turns off the light, and you move on. One hour seems short for 700 motifs and 70 animals, and it is: you don’t see everything, you see what the guide chooses to show, and two guides won’t show exactly the same things. The pace is that of a slow walk with stairs. The ground is sometimes damp, and at 12°C, you’ll start feeling the cold after about forty minutes if you’re wearing just a T-shirt. See what to wear.

Before and after: the film and the museum

The ticket also grants access to an introductory film and the Amédée Lemozi museum, dedicated to the prehistory of Quercy. Almost all visitors who leave reviews say the same thing: watch the film before, not after. Its format is dated, but it explains the 1922 discovery and how the paintings were dated, and the guided tour moves faster when you have these reference points. The museum can be explored in half an hour, longer with children who read the panels.

All together: twenty minutes of film, one hour in the cave, half an hour in the museum, plus waiting for your time slot, restrooms, and the gift shop. Two hours is a realistic minimum, two and a half hours is comfortable.

And what about the ‘Prehistory Park’?

This is a common question. In Cabrerets, there is no ‘park’—the site is called the Pech Merle Prehistory Centre, and it includes the cave, the museum, the auditorium and the projection room. The duration is as described above. The Prehistory Park in Tarascon-sur-Ariège is a different site, several hours’ drive away.

Half-day from Cahors

Cahors is 40 km away, about a 45-minute drive via the Lot and Célé valleys. If you leave in the morning for a 10:00 time slot, you’ll be back in Cahors for lunch, or you can eat in Cabrerets. This is the shortest option. It’s frankly unbalanced: an hour and a half’s drive for an hour in the cave. It’s worth it, but it’s short.

A day with Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

The logical way to make the most of the journey is to continue. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is a fifteen-minute drive from Cabrerets, and the towpath at Bouziès, carved into the cliff, is on the way back to Cahors. This is exactly the sequence of the excursion from Cahors: the cave in the morning, free time and lunch in Saint-Cirq, the towpath, and return in the late afternoon—eight hours in total. A word of warning: Saint-Cirq at 3 pm in August is packed. Visiting the cave in the morning and the village in the afternoon is the best way to avoid the worst of the crowds.
